Who is Rebel Mermaid?
Hi! I’m Paula a.k.a Rebel Mermaid from the Philippines. I’m a procrastinating travel blogger/wanna-be vlogger, watersport lover (SCUBA diving, wake boarding and surfing) and thrifty backpacker who loves offbeat travel spots, fresh and natural stuff and awesome local communities!
I love going on adventures both on land and water, exploring new travel spots and experiencing cultures from a local’s perspective and yes, I used to do beauty competitions.
In fact, I was Miss SCUBA International 2013 First Runner-up, Miss Mandaue 2010 First Runner-up, Miss Ormoc 2009 First Runner-up (watch my embarassing swimsuit video) and many more but all of it because I got to dive, eat and travel for free!
Find out more about the roads less traveled in the Philippines by subscribing in my blog and over Youtube.
P.S. I once ended up in a Malaysian travel show too because of Couchsurfing!

In full third person voice… 😉
After surviving the Ormoc Tragedy of 1991, one of the worst floods in the Philippines, growing up financially challenged and being bullying during her childhood, she realized that she cannot stay as a victim. This prompted her to go on a journey towards self-improvement, she moved to Manila on her own to learn the ropes in business where she discovered her affinity for marketing, community and tech startups.
Based in Cebu City, she is currently working on her eco startup while building the startup community and learning how to code after her stint as Community Manager for an international cryptocurrency exchange and Lead for a coworking space.
She is also currently the Chapter Director for Startup Grind Cebu, Ambassador for Internations Cebu, a Climate Reality Leader and Corporate Secretary for FundLife International.
Her aim is to help carry out positive social change that would allow the youth and fellow travelers act against social injustices and protect the environment. A pragmatic dreamer who sees each day is an opportunity to educate, empower and change for the greater good. She contributes in increasing public interest about the different causes such as gender equality, youth empowerment and environmental conservation.
From January-June 2015, she volunteered for Fundlife International where she acted as project assistant. She helped in the cultivation of potential among Typhoon Haiyan child survivors and expansion of partnership with other organisations. She also worked temporarily for Rare, an international NGO focused on marine conservation through efficient and effective fisheries management and was National Director for Miss SCUBA Philippines 2016.
She was the first Ormocana to represent the city in Binibining Pilipinas 2013 and the first international title winner after bagging Miss SCUBA International First Runner-up in 2013 at Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. In 2014, she also represented Philippines in Shenzhen, China for the Miss Tourism International.
As a Toastmaster and a competitive public speaker, she also represented Area 23 for the Division C Humorous Speech Contest
When not working, you can find her exploring the offbeat roads of unpopular destinations (scuba diving, surfing or eating), helping organisations make the world a better place or prowling across the worldwide web in search for new knowledge, unique technologies and good stories.
